For over 20 years, our use of personal computers has been limited by the software we could load and use on our individual devices. If you didn't have a copy of a word processing program on your computer - you were out of luck when it came to writing or reading documents. Putting copies of individual software programs on each individual computer can be compared to every house needing its own electric generator to produce electricity.
Cloud computing is the equivalent of having your electricity come from a distant generating plant, delivered to your home via electric wires. You can use powerful web tools without having to load any software programs on your computer. The main application lives on a server off in a distant location, and you use the tool via Internet access. Because of the "virtual" nature of this software, it's often said that your work lives in the cloud. You may also see the term "web 2.0 tool" used, too.
In either case, you are using the resources of the software company to help build and maintain your business. They manage the servers needed to keep your software up to date, and back up your data.
You always have access to the latest version of the software. It's also convenient - your calendar, client data, and documents are as close as the nearest computer with Internet access.
